Happy Christmas

by Janie Jones

Recently something made me think of this YouTube gem, so I dug it up.  I have been addicted to it this past week or so.

So, my gift to you all:

Be sure to watch all the way to the very end.  Which I don’t think I ever did when I discovered it back when it was first published.

If you want something more traditionally heartwarming, I highly recommend checking out Klaus available on Netflix.

Leif, the spud and I watched it yesterday and there wasn’t a dry eye on the sofa. I think it is officially my new favorite Christmas movie.  Well, okay, maybe I should say my favorite animated Christmas movie.  Nothing can top A Christmas Story.

Wishing you everything good this holiday season!

I am still here…

by Janie Jones

Fall semester held me in it’s miserable thrall up to the last possible moment.  I didn’t do as well as I’d hoped, but all things considered I did pretty well.  As I look at my grades I had to laugh.  Apparently I wasn’t allowed to get the same grade in more than one class:

Genetics Lab: A

Virology: A-

Genetics Lecture: B+

Biochemistry Lecture: B

Biochemistry Lab: B-

If it wasn’t for that cursed Biochemistry Lab being twice the work of all my other classes combined it would have been a very different semester, I tell you.

But, it is over and now I have 72 more class days left in the spring semester to endure before graduation.

The holidays were fun, but busy.  The spud visited which was nice, but exhausting.  And, right after taking her back to the airport it was a mad dash to finish off the essays for my Graduate School application.

Oh, that was fun.  Man o man, have I stories I could tell, only I’m so ripped to shreds by the last 4 months that I have lost the will to bitch.

In any event, it has been submitted and application fees are paid so it is out of my hands now.  The decision on whether I am accepted will probably come sometime by the end of March. Depending on the outcome I may graduate in May and be done with the collegiate chapter of my life, or I may decide I haven’t been totally and utterly annihilated by the educational system yet and pick up another 4-6 years.

And in the Lyme Research Lab we have been out of media (read bacteria food) for over 2 months.  Apparently there is only one place in the United States that makes the precise formula these bacteria live on, and they are, I guess, back ordered for some unfathomable reason.

I managed to scrounge up a couple dozen mLs from another researcher who didn’t need it and have had my little buggers on short rations this whole time.  But I have about two more feedings left (about 2 weeks) and then they starve to death.

You might not think this is such a bad thing.  But in a research lab, if you have no subject to research, well, you don’t get much done.  And, in general you don’t get paid to do nothing.  I volunteer, so what does that say about me.  Should I be worried?  Well, I kinda wanted to do my graduate studies with this lab.

Well here’s hoping 2016 is a better year.

One fish, two fish, red fish, delish fish

by Janie Jones

We celebrated Christmas in July last week on my vacation as I didn’t get to see the spud for the holiday proper.  I got, can you guess?  Swedish Fish!  30.4 ounces of Swedish Fish, to be exact.

July 2015 015

And, they are the full rainbow of colors, as proper Swedish Fish should be, not just the red ones that some cheap packages sell.  I’m not sure why, but there does seem to be a preponderance of the red fish, however.  Also curious is that they are mini fish, not full size.

July 2015 016

Hmm.  I guess that means I can eat twice as many because they are half the size.

Has it really been two weeks since my last post?

by Janie Jones

Greetings all.

I didn’t fall off the face of the Earth, nor get hauled away for being rude to unwanted house guests.

I did spend much of the last two weeks working and sleeping.  Then, just as I was feeling pretty good about my level of relaxation, I got a cold which knocked me out for the last week or so.

In any case, I had a very quiet Christmas with Leif at the farm, and am doing my best to enjoy every moment of not being in school.  The grades were posted, and while I would have preferred my grade point average to not take such a hit, I was very pleased in general to have got a C in Physics.  I tell you what, mediocrity never felt so satisfying before.  As it happens, I missed a B by 3 percentage points, so all in all I think I did pretty well.  But we are not done whingeing about Physics yet…  One more semester to go.

I hope you all had lovely Christmases and wish you the happiest new year!

Tuesday Titters: Question of the ages

What will fall on the lawn first?  An autumn leaf or a Christmas catalog?
