An Ode to Tilly Bud: the worst birthday poem ever

by Janie Jones

happy birthday banner

Thinking of you today, dear Tilly, and sending sincerest wishes:

May your day be filled with good friends, loving family and slobbery dog kisses,

May your box of Maltesers over floweth,

And may the sun shine where ever you go-eth!

May your tea kettle freely flow,

May the pile of crumpled wrapping paper grow.

May you grow old and wise,

(Though I feel a need to clearly emphasize,

That’s not to imply that you are still young),

And have travels far-flung.

For ever and always, I hope life treats you well,

In short, have a birthday that’s totally swell.

Happy Birthday Frankie

by Janie Jones

Or perhaps we should say happy re-animation day.

Happy B Day Frankie

You’re 197?  Wow.  You don’t look a day over dead!

Well, I don’t know if this is true, but Holidays for Today claims it’s true.  And, it’s just weird enough for a random Wednesday post.  Apparently March 11, 1818 is credited as being the date Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein was written.  You know, I bought a copy once many years ago but found it so dull I never got very far into it.  Perhaps I should try again.  Anything sounds like a worthwhile endeavor compared to studying.

What’s more, it seems to me I remember watching a black and white Frankenstein movie when I was a kid.  Mostly I remember it being sad for some reason.  Sad, but also boring.  And I remember watching the Mel Brooks/Gene Wilder Young Frankenstein more recently.  And when I say more recently I mean that as in I last watched it about 25 years ago.  That version I found sad too, but in the sense that someone actually wasted film on it.  I can’t say I found it any more riveting than the classic flick or the book.  I had some friends who adored the flick, but all I can remember is the Teri Garr roll-in-the-hay bit, “Would you like to have a roll in ze hay?  It’s fun!  Roll, roll, roll in ze hay!”

Sorry folks.  That’s all I’ve got today.  Microbiology midterm at three pm today.  Need I say more?

Hippo Birdie Two Ewe, Chuck!

Today is the birthday of Charles Darwin.

In honor of the man, it has also been designated Charles Darwin Day.

In honor of the day, here’s some Darwin Quotes I particularly like:

Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science.

Freedom of thought is best promoted by the gradual illumination of men’s minds which follows from the advance of science.

It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage change.

I am turned into a sort of machine for observing facts and grinding out conclusions.

There are some who try to dispute the value of his work.  I will not attempt to support or denounce these voices, I can only say that I truly believe there must be value in asking questions which stretch our minds and understanding.  Charles Darwin dared to ask, he dared to postulate and he dared to pay the price.

If only we could all be so wise and brave.

Happy birthday, to you Charles Darwin.

Hippo birdie to me

by Janie Jones

“Birthdays are nature’s way of telling us to eat more cake.”

– Author unknown

Today is the big day.

I’ve been so busy with end of the term school stuff and being too tired to think too much about how to celebrate,  as with so many things in my life right now birthday revelry is rather being put on hold for school and sleeping.

Still, Leif came to town last night and we went to the physics fair, which I got extra credit for, and we had sandwiches together before hand with a birthday present.  While not the most exciting birthday celebration of all time, it was actually quite enjoyable and relaxing and that’s what I need these days.  And, once I’m finished with the semester, we plan to do a non-school related celebratory activity.  As Leif says, it will extend my birthday and spread out the fun.  I like that idea.

But until then, school calls.

Happy December 1st

by Janie Jones

Hello.

It’s December.  The snow has started falling on the ol’ blog.  And, my birthday is just 5 days away.

Leif has been asking what I’d like to do for my birthday.  Right now, sleeping all day sounds pretty choice.

I had a pretty lovely Thanksgiving.  Leif made mashed potatoes, turkey gravy and had some precooked turkey in the freezer.  He brought everything to town and we had a simple open faced turkey sandwich dinner.  It tasted wonderful, but the best part was I didn’t have to spend all morning cooking and the afternoon cleaning.  We sat and watched TV.  We ate.  We drank gallons of tea.  And it was very, very peaceful and relaxing.  I was surprised to find that after all, it was one of the nicest Thanksgivings I can remember in a long, long while.

Friday I had to do mountains of homework and I worked both Saturday and Sunday.  But, Leif and some friends came to town on Saturday so we went out to a delicious dinner and had yet more tea afterward which was much, much fun.

Now, however, I’m back to school and exhausted.

So what do I want to do for my birthday?  Well, birthday wish #1 is NO HOMEWORK!

We shall see.

Because you can never have too many

by Janie Jones

It might be today, September 30th.  Give or take a day.   I’ve known it was coming, however, to be honest, there’s been so much fan fare, preemptive celebration and gift giving it would be hard to over look.  But as to the actual moment, I’ve kinda gotten confused when it officially is.  Last year I missed it, so I have been determined not to drop the ball this year.  But, even after scanning all the old posts from this time frame last year, I can’t seem to tell just when the actual moment is.  I *think* it is today.

The actual moment of what?

The moment when the illustrious Tilly Bud of The Laughing Housewife actually has her 50th birthday.

Well, if I’m right, and today is your birthday, here’s a birthday greeting:

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you.  You look like a monkey, and you smell like one too.

And, here’s a birthday joke for you:

A family had twin boys whose only resemblance to each other was their looks. If one felt it was too hot, the other thought it was too cold. If one said the TV was too loud, the other claimed the volume needed to be turned up. Opposite in every way, one was an eternal optimist, the other a doom and gloom pessimist. Just to see what would happen, on the twins’ birthday their father loaded the pessimist’s room with every imaginable toy and game. The optimist’s room he loaded with horse manure. That night the father passed by the pessimist’s room and found him sitting amid his new gifts crying bitterly. ‘Why are you crying?’ the father asked. ‘Because my friends will be jealous, I’ll have to read all these instructions before I can do anything with this stuff, I’ll constantly need batteries, and my toys will eventually get broken,’ answered the pessimist twin. Passing the optimist twin’s room, the father found him dancing for joy in the pile of manure. ‘What are you so happy about?’ he asked. To which his optimist twin replied, ‘There’s got to be a pony in here somewhere!’

-I can’t take credit for this joke, it’s courtesy of Man Walks Into A Joke

And, because you can never have too many, here’s a birthday wish:

May your box of Maltesers runneth over, and always be calorie free.  Of course, I have to add, that if you like ponies, may you find your bedroom filled with manure.

But, if today isn’t your birthday, then just forget I mentioned it.

Hugs, Janie

**Update**  Today does appear to be Tilly’s special day.

Congrats to us both:  you for being 50, me for not being embarrassingly late to the party, well, less the time difference from there to here.
