Are we there yet?

by Janie Jones

I have been plodding along reading “A Stranger In A Strange Land” by Robert A. Heinlein for probably a year now.

I think I started it last summer, found it boring, and didn’t get very far.  Then school started.  During the school year my extra curricular reading tended towards the much more light and fluffy.  Since class ended for the spring, I felt the need to finish the book.  I borrowed it from a friend, and while I made certain that he knew I wouldn’t be blazing through it and would be borrowing it for an extended period of time, I felt like I should get it over with and get it back to it’s owner.

Now, I will say this, it picked up somewhat in the middle, but now entering the last third of the book it has become a real pain to slog through.  If it wasn’t considered a classic, I’d pitch it right in the garage sale pile.  But, I want to be able to say I know how it ends, so I’m sticking with it despite it’s seemingly unnecessary pornographic polygamist-esque turn.

For those of you who know the book, I’m just at the part where Mike obtains his doctorate of divinity.  Perhaps it will turn around and end strong.  But, from where I’m standing, it will have to be some pretty amazing writing for me to ever understand why this book was considered a hallmark of science fiction writing.  Okay, I’m going to go sit and try and make some headway now.  I’ll let you all know how it turns out.  Take that as a promise or a threat, depending on whether or not you like the book yourself.
