Are we even speaking the same language?

by Janie Jones

The spud is now aged 8.  Sometimes however, it is as if she is still a wee tot who’s just learning to talk.

Spud:  The cottage cheese filling in the lasagna is really, really hot.

Leif:  Why do you think that is?

Spud:  Because I tasted it.

Me:  Because you tasted it?

Spud:  Yeah.  And it’s really, really hot.

Leif:  But, why do you think it’s hot?

Spud:  *long suffering sigh*  Because I tasted it.

Me:  Yes.  We know how you know it’s hot, but we’re asking why you think it is hot.

Long pause…

Spud:  * Blank stare*  Blinks* Finally looks at plate and resumes eating*

Spud:  This lasagna is really, really hot.

Sometimes dinner conversation at the Jones household is like the audio version of an M.C. Escher painting.

  1. One thing is for sure: No matter how much you converse, the conversation always ends back where it started, except not in the same place.
